A New Machine

I’m going through the always difficult process of upgrading to a new phone. What I consider an upgrade and what is considered state of the art, or at least industry standard, are two completely different things. It’s a good thing that I am not trying to “keep up with the Jones’s “because I would be way behind. A new phone is something that I have been putting off for a long time, but I finally had enough of rebooting, missed messages and other inconveniences – but, now I have to pay $30 a month and I have to be careful that I don’t break the phone. Oh yeah! and make sure that my number was actually switched over from my government issued welfare phone to this one.

I have always been here
I have always looked out from behind these eyes
It feels like more than a lifetime
Feels like more than a lifetime

Sometimes I get tired of the waiting
Sometimes I get tired of being in here
Is this the way it has always been?
Could it ever have been different?

Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?
Don’t worry, nobody lives forever,
Nobody lives forever

Study tips from me (an expert?)

  1. If it’s the night before the test you’re too late – better to get some sleep
  2. Do all of the homework
  3. Do all of the homework again
  4. Take good notes in class
  5. Drawing pictures helps
  6. If you don’t understand something 100% reference another textbook
  7. Rewrite all the examples from class
  8. If the homework is 10 problems, do 20 or even 30
  9. It helps to explain difficult or challenging topics to someone else out loud
  10. Use pencils and unlined copy paper

Am I the only person who looks at that equation and sees something so elegant and poetic that da Vinci himself would bow in respect? That such beauty can emerge from what was so recently, just a few lines previously in fact, an unwieldy tangle of disparate pieces of discarded solutions is Art as sure as the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or the dogs playing poker.

There was a little bit of synchronicity today. We discussed maps in both Western Civ and Environmental Studies; both classes addressed the inaccuracies of “anglocentric” Mercator maps.

The Flat Earth People

Every time that I think I have completely forgotten about the Flat Earth Conspiracy some troglodyte pops up declaring that the Earth is flat “because it looks that way from here”. I know that it’s not even worth the oxygen to debate these homunculi, but I feel compelled to make them stop. It is immaterial whether they actual believe their bullshit or not. My real concern is that famous athletes and rappers going around telling kids that the Earth is flat; that everyone has been lying to them, all the scientists and grown up and “smart people” are trying to trick them as part of a nefarious scheme. The real crime is the disservice these people are doing to society by warping the minds of children. Isn’t that what Socrates was executed for in 399 BC – impiety and corruption of youth? Can we bring the same charges against the boobs who publicly claim the Earth is flat ( a lie) and worse, defaming (insulting) the scientists (gods) and pollution the minds of children by introducing false gods (NBA stars and rappers).
